Side 1 Track 1 - More Obscure Edition

Category

Well apparently Nathan thinks our songs were not obscure enough.

So, I started looking for really great opening tracks from artists you may not have heard of. I came up with so many, that I thought I would just list them out for you. I'm sure there are some on this list you know, but hopefully a lot you do not as well.

Punk
  • This Could Be Love by Alkaline Trio - Lyrics like 'Step one -- slit my throat Step two -- play in my blood Step three -- cover me in dirty sheets and run laughing out of the house' makes for an interesting song
  • Everything Sucks by The Descendents
  • Sometimes I Don't Mind by Suicide Machines - Best ode to your dog ever.

Metal
  • In The Meantime by Helmet
  • 30/30 - 150 by Stone Sour
  • Independent by Sacred Reich - These guys sent me a bong with their logo on it when I worked in radio!
  • Knives by Therapy?
  • Foul Taste of Freedom by Pro-Pain - It's from the early 90's but seems pretty apropos to today

Alternative
  • All-Right (Oh Yeah) by Local H - Best two person band you'll ever see live
  • A Girl Like You by The Smithereens
  • The World Around Me by King's X
  • Amazing by Johnette Napolitano - The lead singer of Concrete Blonde has a killer solo album
  • Surefire by Econoline Crush
  • So Cold by Breaking Benjamin
  • King of New Orleans by Better Than Ezra
  • Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional

Rock
  • Lifts You Up by Beth Hart - One of the most passionate vocalists I've ever heard. Check out her live stuff.
  • Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn
  • Follow Through by Gavin DeGraw
  • All For You by Sister Hazel - Great lyrics

Pop
  • You're The Only One by Maria Mena
  • Favorite Song by Nine Days
  • Steal My Sunshine by Len - I dare you to not be happy after this song
  • These Days by Jennifer Paige
  • I Wanna Be There by Blessid Union of Souls
  • Just the way it is, Baby by The Rembrandts - These guys were more than the 'Friends Theme' band.

As for Industrial, and Nathan's comments about Skinny Puppy. I never really dug them, but if you wanna get into some obscure stuff, I could probably dedicate an entire post to just weird ass industrial

1 - Tim, I could go way more obscure with this if I was allowed any track by any band. That's when we start getting into Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction territory Emoticon

So, coming up with track 1's that were really some of the best songs I liked by a band, AND having them be a little more obscure was a lot of scanning through my iTunes library.

And you are correct Steve, the rest of the album was pretty bad except for one or two songs.

And Nathan, I dunno, I was never into Skinny Puppy or Front 242 much either for that matter. Maybe I should revisit them again in my old age Emoticon

2 -
I looove Beth Hart. I have "Screamin' for My Supper", which is such a great album. My favourite song has to be "Get Your Shit Together" followed by "Favorite Things" ("Laugh until it pisses everybody off. Pulling up my dress at a dinner meeting.") Gotta love those lyrics.
I only recently heard her live stuff. Forget Janis Joplin. Beth blows her out of the water by miles. Simply. a. mazing.
I also am really getting into "Orson" lately.
The lyrics from "Already Over" are great:

"And I'd rather be anyone but Here
And anyplace else but Me.
I'll just climb inside my head awhile-
My demons have a date with me."

or how about

"And I hate that i still love you, girl-
And I only wish you well.
But I'll never be man enough for you,
Cuz you're a psycho bitch from Hell."

These guys have issues, but they're definitely entertaining.

3 - I don't know. At this point, doesn't it just become an "obscure track" list? By getting this obscure, does it really matter if they are Track 1, Side 1?

4 - Steal My Sunshine by Len - I dare you to not be happy after this song <--You are right about feeling happy with this song. The rest of the album emm different story.

5 - LOL. Some great choices.

I know Helmet, Stone Sour (BKA Slipknot, of course), The Smithereens, King's X (seen 'em live), Breaking Benjamin, Better Than Ezra ("Good" is a 90's classic!), Dashboard Confessional (seen 'em live), Mark Cohn (You should check out Marc Broussard!), Sister Hazel (seen 'em live in a club the size of my living room!) and the Rembrandts (who sing out of tune)

And you like Industrial but not Skinny! BLASPHEMY!!! How do you get more industrial than Deep Down Trauma Hounds? When the VOCALIST uses a RAT pedal, that's hardcore! Emoticon
